The beauty of an Art Deco Mirror

Art Deco was a movement that started in the 1920s and became a major influence on art, design and fashion throughout the 1920s. It was first shown at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925,and that's where its name comes from. The style was characterized by clean and simple geometric shapes, although it was used for both mass produced and handmade luxury products the idea behind it was to have style and elegance. In fact expensive materials were often use to make the objects and marrying quite well artificial materials such as plastic and bakelite with natural material such as ivory or silver.

Art Deco was influenced by modernism and modern art movements such as Art Nouveau and Cubism but it also looks at nature, Sumerian, Egyptian and Native American art among others for inspiration. Art Deco objects were often made individually or in very limited editions therefore it is quite difficult and expensive to find genuine items these days.

If you are looking for an art deco mirror you will be able to find many contemporary mirrors in art deco style and fashion at different prices and of varying quality. Art Deco has been such an influential design movement that has been revived several times since the 1960s (accidentally between the 1940s and 1960s Art Deco was seen in rather negative terms as a style that was best forgotten). You do not have to settle for cheap replicas as you will find well designed mirror in an art deco style. Even a website like Etsy has many wonderful revivalist designs in an art deco style and if you are in a shopping mode it is definitely worth a look. Depending on your budget your might choose to buy a real vintage art deco mirroc as you might also consider it as an investment. Your best chances are to visit auctions and antique shops, you should be able to find vintage art deco mirrors on eBay but be real careful as there are several items that are described as genuine art deco when they are clearly not.

Before buying you will also have to consider how an art deco mirror will look together with the rest of your home decor. Art Deco signifies luxury, glamour and decadence therefore you have to think whether it is the right style for you or not.
