Stop motion animation or the art to make an immobile object appear moving has enjoyed a mass revival in the past few years thanks to the many different types of software available that can even be used by young people and beginners that allow to create animations. And also thanks to video sites such as YouTubes which allow for an easy and fast distribution. Stop motion animation videos, if well done, often become viral on the internet.
Stop motion animation has been around for a very long time. The first known example goes back to 1898 in a movie called" The Humpty Dumpty Circus"when toy animals come to life. Stop motion animation was used in other short movies at the beginning of the 20th century but the first time that was used in a major release was in the movie "King Kong"in 1933.
It was only in the 1960s and 1970s that stop motion animation was used more and more especially to animate puppets quite often made of clay (a technique also called clay-motion). It has always used in many major movies such as "Coraline"or "Who framed Roger Rabbit?" "Coraline" is also remarkable as it is the first movie to have been shot entirely in stereoscopic stop motion.
