Sapphire Rings and Jewelry
By gorfor
Like ruby sapphire is a variety of corundum. When it is red or pink is called ruby when it is any other colour is called a sapphire. Among the most famous and valuable sapphires are blue but they can also be colourless or yellow and green. Deeper blue with violet hues would be valuable but if the hues are green the sapphire would be less valuable. Colourless sapphires are often used as a replacement for diamonds. There are also some sapphires that much like garnets and moonstones change colour according to the light. The most valuable sapphire is called padparadscha, it is very rare and found only in Sri Lanka, it looks more like a ruby as it is bright orange. A sar sapphire is a sapphire that when exposed to light shows a star shaped pattern of light. Sapphires are found in Australia, Sri Lanka, Montana (USA), Thailand and Madagascar.
As most gemstones sapphire are heat treated to make them clearer and improve their colour. Synthetic sapphires are also fairly common and they are not just used in jewelry, sapphire is a hard gemstone with a high conductivity for heat and therefore has many industrial uses. These sapphire are normally called created sapphires. There is not much wrong with them and some are actually very good quality but you have to know what you are buying. You do not want to pay for a created sapphire the same you would pay for a natural one.
It was believed that sapphires gave longevity to love and that is the reason why it is still one of the favourite gemstone for an engagement ring. Sapphire is also the birthstone for those born in September. You can also combine the two things and buy a sapphire engagement ring for someone born in September or for a September engagement, that is sure to impress.
Sapphires can be really expensive and what you would find in jewelry will be mainly small stones. If you would like to buy a fairly large sapphire buy it loose and then order bespoke jewelry. Sapphire can also look great as earrings, necklaces, bracelets. If you want something that you can easily wear every day without too many worries, you might would like to consider a lab created sapphire instead, as the cost would be much lower. The advantage of sapphire is that is very hard and does not scratch easily, so unlike other gems is more than suitable as a gem in a ring. Avoid though wearing your ring when you are cleaning and using cleaning detergents and other chemicals as they might damage the sheen and luster of your sapphire.
As usual get informed and go to a reputable store or jeweller when buying a sapphire ring or jewelry as you want to have reliable information on its origin and the way that is has been treated to be able to make an informed choice before parting with you money.
